McCarren Park: A Shared Landscape Between Two Brooklyn Neighborhoods

Discover
McCarren Park sits between Williamsburg and Greenpoint, bringing a broad range of outdoor activity into one North Brooklyn landscape. A running track, playing fields, courts and lawns give a visit several possible rhythms. You can come with a particular game in mind or spend time watching the changing activity around you, moving from an open playing surface toward a tree-lined path or a place to sit.
The track offers an easy visual introduction. Its four-hundred-meter loop surrounds a turf field, setting out a clear pattern of movement within the park. Elsewhere, tennis and handball courts create smaller spaces with their own pace. The contrast between organized surfaces and planted edges gives an ordinary walk something to follow: the curves of a track, the straight lines of a court and the less regular forms of trees.
The pool and play center add an architectural focus. McCarren's outdoor pool was one of eleven public pools that opened across the city in the summer of 1936. After decades of use and a long closure, the complex was restored and reopened in 2012. Its substantial brick buildings and central archway give this part of the park a scale quite different from a modest neighborhood playground.
The restoration kept traces of the building's original work. Wire baskets once used to store swimmers' clothing were recovered and hung in the entrance lobbies. Reclaimed planks from the Coney Island boardwalk became interior wood finishes. These details connect two Brooklyn recreation landscapes through reused materials, making the building's history visible in objects that once had a practical purpose.
New work also changed the complex. Open-air changing pavilions were placed alongside the pool, while the old bathhouse gained an indoor recreation and community center. The central arch remained an organizing feature, linking the approach with the pool beyond. The result shows how a historic recreation building can take on additional uses while keeping a recognizable public entrance.
Outside that complex, the park continues to support everyday neighborhood visits. Playgrounds, a dog run and open ground offer different reasons to return. A Saturday greenmarket adds another kind of activity, with the current schedule best checked through its organizers. In a July 2019 visit, Tripadvisor reviewer Russ1470 enjoyed relaxing and watching a local baseball game, a simple example of how a visitor can take part by being a spectator.
Care for the landscape has its own community dimension. The Stewards of McCarren Park describes work on tree care, gardening, litter removal and flood mitigation. Such tasks support the spaces that visitors often move through without a second thought. They also offer opportunities to know the park through a scheduled volunteer activity, alongside the more familiar possibilities of exercise or a picnic.
Choose the part of the park that matches your plans. Pool entry follows seasonal arrangements and its own rules; indoor recreation facilities and tennis also need separate planning. Check their current information before making a trip depend on them. For an uncomplicated visit, follow the public paths, notice the relationship between sports and trees, and leave time for the neighborhood life unfolding around the fields.
