Define comfort for your own trip
“Comfortable” depends on the traveller and the route. A shaded museum day asks less of the weather than six hours of exposed walking, and someone arriving from a cold climate may read the same temperature differently.
Using a broad walking range rather than a promise of perfect weather, September, August, February, July appear closest to moderate daytime conditions in the 2021–2025 observations for Chiang Mai.
The moderate band in recent observations
The warmest observed monthly daytime average was about 35.3°C in April; the coolest night-time average was about 16.5°C in January. These are monthly means, not daily limits.
Place the longest outdoor section in the part of the day that suits the season. Add shade and water in warmer conditions, or daylight and an extra layer when mornings and evenings are cool.
Plan the longest walk carefully
A comfortable month can still contain wet, windy or unusually hot days. Build a second route from markets, galleries, covered streets or cafés before departure rather than improvising only after the weather turns.
Nearby food and hotel links below help compress the route. Shorter transfers make a larger difference to comfort than choosing dates from a generic “best season” list.
Keep an indoor version of the day
After identifying two or three possible months, compare accommodation cost, transport, closures and the events you actually want to attend. Climate is one filter, not the whole decision.
Turn climate into a final date
Use a current forecast close to departure and adjust the order of the day. The recent averages on this page are a planning baseline, never a guarantee.
