Wolf Lake State Forest

Three Lakes and the Routes Between Them

Discover

Wolf Lake State Forest offers a lake-to-lake woodland landscape in Hermon and Edwards in St. Lawrence County. Its 4,316 acres contain routes associated with Moon, Wolf, and Huckleberry lakes, each giving a walk a possible destination. The attraction is not simply having three names to tick off. It is the chance to choose a manageable route through water, woods, and the traces of earlier land use, with enough variety to support more than one visit.

The official map is especially useful because several approaches and connecting trails serve the lakes. DEC describes routes from the Talcville side and from Sam Day Road, with different distances and marker colors. Choose the access that fits the lake and route you intend to reach, then plan the return. Do not add every listed distance together without checking how the segments connect. A short lake visit, an out-and-back, and a longer multi-lake circuit are different outings with different demands on time and preparation.

The lakes also differ in scale. DEC identifies Moon as the smallest of the three named waters, with Wolf and Huckleberry larger. That variation can become an observational theme: how does a more enclosed water surface feel compared with a broader one, and how does the surrounding woodland frame it? Use a lawful shore or trail position for photographs rather than assuming every bank is public access. At Huckleberry Lake, the property boundary itself is part of the map-reading task, since the forest does not encompass every surrounding space.

The reforestation history adds another layer. State purchases during the 1950s and 1960s brought former farmland into management for timber and public recreation. The routes and woodland therefore belong to a landscape with an earlier agricultural identity. A walk can be organized around transitions between old access tracks and more enclosed forest, or around the different tree patterns visible along the chosen path. Avoid treating any old foundation or road as permission to explore beyond the marked and authorized route.

An October 2021 account on Hiking the Trail to Yesterday describes a visit to Huckleberry Lake and appreciation of the evergreen woods and fungi along the way. The writer also reported rain and noted that the trail had improved compared with earlier visits. Those observations belong to that particular day. They provide a personal view of the place, not a current maintenance survey or a guarantee of dry footing, visible mushrooms, or an identical route experience. Historical distances and parking descriptions still need to be checked against current operator information.

Lean-tos and designated campsites add overnight possibilities, but a shelter shown on a map is not reserved space or a promise of services. For a first visit, select one lake or a clearly understood route suited to the group, with supplies and time for the return. Wildlife habitat and beaver activity may add interest without being guaranteed. Wolf Lake State Forest is strongest as a connected landscape of choices: one water can anchor the day, while the others remain reasons to return. A careful route plan makes room for observation instead of turning the outing into a race between shorelines.

Visitor perspectives

  1. An October 2021 Huckleberry Lake account appreciates evergreen woods and fungi, while describing rain and improvements compared with prior visits. It is a dated personal report, not evidence of present trail conditions or guaranteed observations.

Capture

  1. Frame water within its woodland setting from lawful access.
  2. Photograph fungi and other details in place without collecting them.
