Robinson Hollow State Forest
A Pond Stop and a Different Kind of Trail Day
Discover
Robinson Hollow State Forest offers two useful ways to organize a Southern Tier outing: a visit to Tri-County Pond or a woodland segment of the Finger Lakes Trail. The 1,968-acre property spans Richford in Tioga County, Caroline in Tompkins County, and Harford in Cortland County. That three-county setting gives the pond's name context, while the forest's trails and hollows provide a more enclosed walking landscape. The two subjects can complement one another without being assumed to form a single easy circuit.
Tri-County Pond is a fishing destination identified by DEC, with a parking area associated with the Lacey Road approach. If fishing is your main purpose, check current regulations and access before arrival. A stocking description is not a promise of a catch, and the presence of a pond does not establish swimming or boating facilities. For a shore-based observer, the water and surrounding trees can be enough: choose a lawful position and look at reflections, vegetation, or the way the pond opens the woodland scene.
The Finger Lakes Trail provides a separate route identity. DEC records about two and a half miles within the forest, with a lean-to maintained by the Finger Lakes Trail Conference in the southwestern portion. Choose a suitable segment and return arrangement from current trail information. The distance inside one management unit does not describe the total walk from every possible road crossing, and a shelter should not be assumed to lie on a short circuit from the pond. Map the relationship before combining the two interests.
Local hiking information adds useful detail about the terrain. Ithaca Hikers describes approaches involving sustained climbs, changing woods, old logging roads, and seasonal streams. It also notes limited parking and the need to respect neighboring lawns. Those descriptions help set expectations for a trail day with more route planning than a casual pond stop. They should not become blanket permission to park along any shoulder or to cross an unverified wet area. Use the current official and trail-club information to choose the approach appropriate to your group.
A good observational theme is the contrast between the forest's wider water setting and the more enclosed hollows. Along an authorized trail, consider how a broad old track narrows, how tree cover changes, or how a stream affects the ground beside the route. The interest lies in those transitions rather than an assured panoramic view. Wildlife and plants add possibilities for close attention, but habitat descriptions do not guarantee sightings or justify collecting specimens. A photograph can show texture and scale while leaving the landscape undisturbed.
For a first visit, decide whether the day is primarily a pond stop or a prepared trail outing, then add the other only if the access and time make sense. Snowmobile routes and winter uses follow their own arrangements, so check the relevant map rather than assuming every trail serves every activity. Overnight camping is another separate task with rules and availability to consider. Robinson Hollow rewards a plan matched to its actual geography: water for a focused stop, woods for a longer walk, and enough attention to boundaries and return routes to enjoy both responsibly.
