Burnt-Rossman Hills: Looking Glass Pond and the Long Path

Discover
Burnt-Rossman Hills State Forest gives a woodland outing two quite different starting points: a pond-side recreation area and a section of a long-distance hiking route. Its 10,568 acres extend through Blenheim, Fulton, Jefferson and Summit in Schoharie County. The scale allows many possible visits, but choosing one focus is more useful than attempting to experience the entire forest at once.
Looking Glass Pond occupies the northern part of the property. DEC identifies a picnic area, fishing piers, viewing platforms and a boat dock in this recreation setting, along with a hand launch for paddling. Those facilities distinguish the pond area from the wider forest. Check current access and conditions before bringing fishing or paddling equipment, and do not assume a named launch promises a staffed rental service or a particular boat trip.
Accessibility information is specific enough to help with planning. From the main parking area on Rossman Hill Road, DEC lists accessible fishing/viewing platforms, a picnic area and a hiking trail. The Looking Glass Pond Accessible Trail runs 0.4 mile one way to an auxiliary parking area, with a firm crushed-stone surface, a minimum width of three feet and a stated maximum slope of 10 percent. Compare those details with your own needs and current conditions rather than treating the whole forest as uniformly accessible.
A separate viewing platform is approached from Morey Road, approximately 500 feet from its parking area. That is another arrival option, not the same route as the 0.4-mile trail. Use the current pond map to select the right approach. For photography, water and woodland can be composed together from an appropriate viewing location without needing a promised animal encounter or a special seasonal display.
For a longer walking focus, approximately 7.1 miles of the Long Path traverse Burnt-Rossman Hills. The Long Path North Hiking Club maintains this section through a volunteer stewardship agreement. The figure describes the section within the forest, not a ready-made circular walk. Plan your turnaround or transport arrangement using the current trail map and conditions before committing to a distance.
Other recreation routes have their own permissions. Mountain biking is allowed on the multipurpose Looking Glass Pond Trail and public forest access roads. That does not establish the same permission for every hiking trail. The forest's snowmobile connections also require seasonal maps and conditions. Keep your route choice tied to the activity you intend rather than combining all marked lines into a single general-use network.
DEC describes six primitive campsites and a lean-to, available first come, first served. Dispersed camping is also allowed under 150-foot setbacks from roads, trails and water. Ranger permits are required for stays beyond three nights or groups of ten or more. Review current site locations and rules before an overnight trip; arriving with a plan does not reserve a particular space.
The wider management purposes include timber production, watershed protection, wildlife habitat and recreation under the Eminence unit plan. The approach to Looking Glass Pond uses West Fulton Road and Rossman Hill Road from Route 30. Follow current maps, state-land guidance and Leave No Trace. A manageable day might center on pond-side observation or a chosen Long Path section, allowing one part of this large forest to become familiar through patient attention.
