Boutwell Hill State Forest

Several Trail Systems, Several Ways to Read the Woods

Discover

Boutwell Hill State Forest is a place where the trail choice shapes the day more than the destination name alone. The property covers 2,964 acres in Charlotte and Cherry Creek in Chautauqua County. DEC describes several overlapping recreation systems, from the Earl Cardot Eastside Overland Trail to northern ski routes and the Homestead Trail. That variety is an advantage when the plan starts with the activity you want to do, then matches it to the correct route.

The Earl Cardot trail crosses the property between Ruttenbur Road and Erwin Road. About 6.4 miles lie within the state forest, as part of a longer county system. The corridor includes woodlots, marsh dikes, and access trails, giving a walk several kinds of landscape to consider. It is not simply an uninterrupted footpath within one public property. Where the longer route leaves public land, road and highway sections are part of the arrangement, so plan a manageable segment and its return before setting out.

The Homestead Trail has a different identity. DEC records improvements completed in 2025 that widened and leveled it to accommodate horse-drawn carriages. That established change matters to walkers because a route can now be shared in a way older accounts do not describe. It also provides an interesting travel theme: recreation infrastructure evolves as communities make room for different uses. Choose the Homestead route with those authorized users in mind, leaving space to pass and avoiding photographic stops that obstruct the way.

Winter brings another layer. DEC identifies about four miles of maintained cross-country ski trails in the northern part of the forest, with access associated with Lewis and Ruttenbur roads. The Boutwell Hill Ski Club contributes stewardship, and some sections coincide with other trail systems. The existence of maintained ski routes does not guarantee suitable snow or grooming on the day you arrive. Check the club's current information, then choose a route matched to your ability and the conditions rather than relying on an appealing winter image.

The forest's earlier transformation also deserves attention. Lands purchased beginning in the 1930s supported timber, recreation, watershed protection, and wildlife. CCC projects included roads and extensive pine and spruce planting on open ground. On a visit, look for planting patterns where they are visible beside the chosen route, or compare the feel of a more regular conifer stand with other woodland growth. Those observations connect present recreation with a long history of work, rather than presenting the forest as scenery untouched by people.

For a first day, select one system and one main purpose: a mapped Overland segment, a suitable Homestead walk, or a winter ski outing supported by current conditions. Activity permissions vary, and horses permitted on one route are not automatically allowed on the Overland trail. The same is true of motorized recreation. A small photographic sequence can follow the route's changing textures without claiming a perfect loop or a guaranteed view. Boutwell Hill's appeal is the range of ways people use and care for the woods; a well-chosen route lets that variety enrich the visit instead of complicating it.
