Harris Hill State Forest

A Chautauqua County Forest with Two Trail Stories

Discover

Harris Hill State Forest offers two complementary ways to explore the woods: a section of the Earl Cardot Eastside Overland Trail and a separate network known as Harris Hill Extension. The 2,271-acre property lies in Ellington and Gerry in Chautauqua County. It is distinct from other Harris Hill destinations elsewhere in New York, so use the county and the state-forest identity when selecting maps or reading visitor accounts. The right location is the first step toward a useful plan.

The Overland trail crosses the forest between Old Chautauqua Road and 28th Creek Road, with about 4.1 miles on state land. DEC describes a corridor moving through woodlots, marsh dikes, and access trails. That mixture offers a walking theme based on transitions: enclosed trees, wetter habitat edges, and stretches shaped by earlier access. Choose a suitable segment and understand the return, because the wider county trail system includes road sections when it leaves public land. Its total extent should not become an assumed forest loop.

Harris Hill Extension has a different emphasis. DEC identifies about 13 miles of mountain-bike trails off Rigby Forest Road in the southern part of the property, connecting with the Overland system. The Western New York Mountain Bicycling Association maintains this network through a stewardship arrangement. For a rider, that means the association's current map and condition information belong in the planning. For a walker, it means understanding how a shared route functions and leaving room for approaching users, particularly at turns or narrower sections.

Conditions can change the suitability of riding. DEC specifically directs visitors to check the association's information because wet or muddy weather may lead to closures. Treat that as part of caring for the trails, not simply a question of whether you mind getting dirty. Riding when a route should rest can damage a surface volunteers work to maintain. Select an activity and route that are currently supported, and avoid turning an old ride log or a sunny photograph into evidence that the trails are ready today.

The forest's origins provide another subject beyond recreation. DEC records acquisition during the 1930s for timber, watershed, wildlife, and public use, followed by CCC planting and protection work. Pine and spruce went into formerly open areas, while boundary identification formed part of the effort to manage the land. Where planting patterns are visible from a permitted route, compare their rhythm with surrounding woodland. Those details can help explain why the present forest looks the way it does without requiring a dramatic scenic landmark.

For a first visit, decide whether the day is primarily an Overland walk or an Extension ride, then choose a modest route from the corresponding map. A photographic sequence could connect a woodland corridor with a visible wetland edge and a detail of planted trees, all from suitable stopping places clear of traffic. Snowmobile and horse uses have separate arrangements and should not be inferred from the bicycle network. Harris Hill's interest comes from the meeting of long-term forest management and active trail stewardship. A clear route choice lets you enjoy that combination while respecting the work and boundaries that sustain it.
