Approach before judging the façade
Architecture begins with approach. Before standing directly in front of KTH Main Building, watch how it appears between roofs, trees and traffic in Stockholm. Distance reveals silhouette and scale; the final few steps reveal joints, weathering and the threshold between street and interior.
Do not search only for the most famous angle. Walk one side, look back and notice which neighbouring buildings the design acknowledges or ignores. The surrounding block explains why the building feels quiet, theatrical, heavy or unexpectedly open.
Material, structure and light
Materials are not a decorative list. Stone carries weight and age, metal can sharpen an edge, glass changes with the sky, and concrete records the method of making it. At KTH Main Building, look for the point where one material meets another; design decisions become clearest at those seams.
Light changes architecture throughout the day. Openings frame views, deep walls hold shadow and reflective surfaces borrow colour from the surroundings. A photograph taken at noon and another near evening may describe two different buildings.
Move through the building at human speed
If entry is allowed, slow down at stairs, corridors and changes in ceiling height. These ordinary passages show how the architect expected a body to move. If the building is not publicly accessible, the exterior and public street remain enough; do not cross barriers for a picture.
Sound and temperature also belong to design. A hard hall returns footsteps, a sheltered court quiets traffic and a shaded passage can make a hot day suddenly comfortable. Notice what the camera cannot keep.
Place the design back in the city
