Why These Two Parks Belong Together

Grand Teton is about the stage. Yellowstone is about the cast.

In Grand Teton, mountains erupt almost vertically from Jackson Hole, creating spectacular backdrops for moose, elk, bison and bears. Cross north into Yellowstone and the landscape spreads into geothermal basins, forests and enormous valleys where wolves, bison, elk and bears move through the ecosystem.

Grand Teton's southern boundary to Yellowstone via the main highway is just over an hour without stops, making this one of America's most natural two-park combinations. (National Park Service)

Set an alarm that feels mildly unreasonable.

Drive into Lamar Valley before sunrise, pull into a legal turnout, take out binoculars or a spotting scope, and watch the valley slowly become visible.

Lamar is one of Yellowstone's premier wildlife areas, with bison and elk attracting wolves and grizzly bears; road pullouts make long-distance observation possible. (National Park Service)

📷 Photography Strategy

Grand Teton owns sunrise. Yellowstone owns wildlife.

Spend your earliest Teton mornings around Oxbow Bend, Mormon Row and Snake River viewpoints. In Yellowstone, stop thinking only in terms of postcards. A distant wolf through morning mist may become a far more meaningful image than your hundredth geothermal pool.

Bring binoculars even if photography isn't your focus. A telephoto lens should never become an excuse to approach wildlife.

🛏️ Best Base Strategy

Spend your first nights around Jackson, Moose or the Jackson Lake/Colter Bay area, then move inside or close to Yellowstone.

If wildlife is the priority, positioning yourself closer to Canyon, Roosevelt or the northern part of Yellowstone can save painfully early drives to Lamar.

Don't try to “check off” animals.

Wildlife viewing works better when you repeatedly return to good habitat at good times. Two Lamar mornings are better than one Lamar morning plus six hours racing to unrelated attractions.
