Why This Road Trip Is Different

Most National Park routes are about mountains, trails and viewpoints.

This one is about ecosystems.

Start among sawgrass, alligators and wading birds. Move into Biscayne Bay, mangroves and coral reefs. Follow the Overseas Highway through the Keys. Then leave your car in Key West and travel another 70 miles across open water to a remote island fortress surrounded by turquoise sea.

The finale feels almost absurdly far removed from the starting point.

Everglades: Slow Down

The Everglades does not reward travelers hunting for “the viewpoint.”

At Shark Valley, watch the edges of the water. At Anhinga Trail, observe rather than march. Around Flamingo, shift attention toward mangroves, birds and marine life.

Biscayne: Get on the Water

Biscayne is not a park where arriving at the visitor-center parking lot means you've really arrived.

Most of the park is water, and the NPS describes boating as one of its main activities. Guided options include coral-reef snorkeling, shipwreck snorkeling, Boca Chita cruises, sailing and lagoon exploration; advance reservations are advised. (National Park Service)

Dry Tortugas: End Where the Highway Cannot Go

Dry Tortugas lies roughly 70 miles west of Key West, with no road connection. Visitors arrive by ferry, seaplane, private boat or permitted charter. (National Park Service)

That makes the last National Park feel earned.

The ferry day trip includes roughly 4.5 hours on the island, while seaplane trips trade higher cost for shorter travel time and a spectacular aerial approach. (National Park Service)

📷 Photography Strategy

Use wildlife behavior rather than close distance in Everglades. In Biscayne, underwater visibility and weather matter more than golden-hour logic. At Dry Tortugas, work with the geometric brick walls of Fort Jefferson against tropical blue water.

An underwater camera or waterproof phone housing suddenly becomes much more valuable than another telephoto lens.

Use Homestead strategically for both southern Everglades and Biscayne, then move to Key West for the Dry Tortugas finale.

That keeps the logistical part surprisingly tidy.
