At Rocky Mountain , you climb above the trees into alpine tundra. In Colorado Springs , red sandstone towers sit beneath Pikes Peak, while the Manitou Incline turns a former railway bed into one of Colorado's most notorious workouts. At Great Sand Dunes , North America's enormous dune field rises directly in front of snowcapped mountains. Then the trip changes completely at Mesa Verde , where the defining story is human rather than geological. Finally, Black Canyon of the Gunnison ends the journey with one of America's most severe landscapes: dark cliffs dropping almost vertically toward the Gunnison River. This route isn't merely four National Parks. It is almost a crash course in Colorado. Colorado mileage has a sneaky habit: a road that looks short on a map gets folded, climbed, twisted and sprinkled with overlooks until three hours disappear. Elevation gain: roughly 2,000 feet Difficulty: Extreme Reward: Bragging rights with unusually strong cardiovascular evidence. Tip Don't schedule this as a casual family walk. The word "Incline" is doing a remarkable amount of understatement here. Afternoon: Pikes Peak From 6,000 Feet to 14,115 Feet ✨ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ After climbing the Incline under your own power, switch philosophies entirely. Drive up Pikes Peak Highway . The paved road climbs roughly 19 miles toward the summit, reaching 14,115 feet , where the modern Summit Visitor Center provides exhibits, food and accessible summit paths. Sunrise Experience Walk only as far as feels comfortable. You do not have to summit a giant dune. Resist the temptation to squeeze an entire Mesa Verde visit into the afternoon. That shift makes the whole trip richer. Tip Reserve a cliff-dwelling tour. For 2026, ranger-led tours including Cliff Palace and Balcony House require reservations, with tickets released on a rolling basis 14 days in advance at 8 a.m. MDT . Popular tours can sell out. The 45-minute tour involves uneven steps and four ladders but is less acrobatic than Balcony House, which includes a 32-foot ladder and a narrow tunnel.
