Here I would make one routing adjustment. For a southbound trip, the cleaner order is generally:

Yosemite → Kings Canyon → Sequoia

rather than Yosemite → Sequoia → Kings Canyon.

The parks themselves haven't moved. Your suitcase simply enjoys less backtracking.

Why This Road Trip Works

Yosemite gives you geology at monumental scale: El Capitan, Half Dome and waterfalls falling from a granite valley.

Kings Canyon then expands the wilderness, mixing giant sequoias with deep Sierra canyon scenery.

Sequoia provides the exclamation point: General Sherman and Giant Forest, where trees become architectural rather than botanical.

The Ideal 7-Day Adventure

The NPS lists the Yosemite Highway 41 entrance to Kings Canyon's Big Stump Entrance at about 130 miles and 2.5 hours, although reaching that point from Yosemite Valley adds additional park driving.

The clever narrative isn't “three parks with trees.”

It's three ways to understand scale.

Yosemite asks: How tall can a cliff feel?

Kings Canyon asks: How deep can a mountain landscape become?

Sequoia asks: How large can a living thing become?

That progression makes this road trip much more emotionally coherent.

📷 Photography Strategy

Use people intentionally for scale. A photograph of a sequoia alone often makes it look smaller, not larger.

At Yosemite, use roads, rivers and meadows as leading lines toward granite formations. In the sequoia groves, photograph a person or trail beside the trunk. In Kings Canyon, let the road disappear into the landscape.

🛏️ Best Base Strategy

Use Yosemite Valley or an entrance community for Yosemite. Move once to Grant Grove for Kings Canyon, then continue south toward Giant Forest/Wuksachi or Three Rivers for Sequoia.

Don't trust a navigation app blindly around Sequoia and Kings Canyon. NPS specifically warns that some GPS routes can send drivers onto inappropriate remote or unpaved roads and recommends using Highway 198 for Sequoia and Highway 180 for Kings Canyon.

Also respect the Sierra roads. The Generals Highway is narrow and winding, and the segment above the Ash Mountain Entrance has vehicle-length advisories.

2026 note: the main Generals Highway and Highway 180 to Cedar Grove are currently open, but seasonal and construction conditions can change.
