New Forge State Forest

A Columbia County Forest Centered on Taghkanic Creek

Discover

New Forge State Forest in the Town of Taghkanic offers a different kind of outing from a park with a marked walking loop. DEC identifies Taghkanic Creek and a stream-side canoe launch as important features, while stating that there are no designated hiking trails. That combination makes the forest most useful to travelers who choose an activity deliberately and prepare for the conditions it requires. A scenic creek description is a starting point, not a complete route plan.

For a visitor on foot, the absence of designated trails is the central planning fact. Hiking is allowed, but permission does not provide wayfinding, a maintained tread, or a suggested circuit. Use the official property map to understand boundaries and access. If you want a straightforward marked walk, consider whether another destination better fits that day's group instead of treating an unmarked forest as an equivalent alternative.

The creek introduces a separate opportunity for paddling. A canoe launch identifies a place to put in, but it does not establish a safe or continuous journey along an entire waterway. Check current water conditions and determine an appropriate route and return arrangement before bringing a boat. A map should be read for access and boundaries, alongside activity-specific information about hazards and suitability.

Fishing provides another way to understand the setting. DEC identifies Taghkanic Creek as a trout stream, with brown and brook trout among the species associated with it. That is habitat information, not a guarantee of a catch. Current fishing rules and public access information need to be checked separately. A state forest boundary does not automatically establish public access to every downstream bank.

A firsthand account by Eli Naeher described dense brush during a June 2021 visit. That historical observation supports taking the lack of designated trails seriously, but it does not describe every current access point or season. The account also discussed an informal swimming objective; it is not adopted here as a recommended activity or a route. A visitor's adventurous choice should not become general travel guidance without an appropriate basis.

The forest is managed for timber, watershed protection, wildlife habitat, and recreation. Those purposes can be considered together when observing the landscape. Water and woodland are part of a managed system rather than a decorative backdrop. Avoid disturbing vegetation to reach a photograph, stay out of active work areas, and leave natural material where it belongs. A carefully chosen observation point can be enough to appreciate the creek setting.

A brief, well-prepared visit can be a better choice than attempting to create a long itinerary from a property without designated walking routes.

Before traveling, use the current DEC map to select a legal access point and check weather, daylight, and activity requirements. Carry navigation and appropriate equipment; make a plan that your group can safely reverse if conditions are unsuitable. An overnight stay needs separate attention to camping rules and permits. New Forge rewards realistic expectations: a creek-centered state forest with limited developed walking infrastructure, where the quality of the outing depends on matching your chosen activity to the actual property rather than an imagined park experience.
