Fort Stanwix National Monument

A Fort at the Oneida Carry

Discover

Fort Stanwix in Rome, New York, interprets a strategic crossing between the Mohawk River and Wood Creek. Long before the fort, the Oneida Carry linked waterways through Oneida territory. The site explores the competing interests of Indigenous nations, European powers, and the United States; the fort seen today is a reconstruction opened in 1976.

Fun facts

  1. British forces built the original fort in 1758.
  2. The modern reconstruction drew on historic plans and archaeological evidence.

Before you go

Check current fort and visitor-center access. Read the interpretation of Indigenous histories as well as the military story, and distinguish reconstructed buildings from original remains.

Capture

Use timber walls, earthworks, and the present-day setting.

Social

At Fort Stanwix, a short overland crossing helps explain a much larger history. The Oneida Carry connected waterways, and control of that route drew competing powers to this place. Today’s reconstructed fort opened in 1976.
