Fish River Lake: A Planned Outing at the Chain’s Western End

Discover
Fish River Lake lies at the western end of the Fish River chain, with a lightly developed setting that rewards planning ahead. The historical state survey records a broad 2,642-acre lake reaching 46 feet at its deepest point. Much of the basin is shallow, and its deeper area does not always separate into warm and cold layers in summer. These characteristics give it a different underwater profile from the chain’s deeper lakes, even when its open surface looks equally expansive.
The state’s current regional fishing guide identifies an unimproved launch reached by gravel road off Wilderness Road. Organize the route before departure and confirm current road and access arrangements rather than treating the last miles as an ordinary paved drive. Choose equipment suited to an unimproved landing, and give yourself enough time to reach the water and return without rushing.
The fisheries survey points toward the lake’s moving-water connections. It identifies salmon spawning and nursery habitat in the outlet above Round Pond, and brook trout habitat in Chase and Smith brooks. Smelt introduced in 1979 subsequently became an important food source for the lake’s game fish. A visit can therefore take in more than the central water: the connections around its margins help explain what lives within the basin. Use current regulations and advice for any fishing plan.
Moose Point Lodge offers another way to arrange time here. Its current vacation information describes bookable lakefront log cabins, meals in the main lodge and canoes or kayaks for a paddle. The operator places the property at the end of a gated road, far from the nearest pavement, and asks visitors to contact it when planning a stay. Confirm the approach, gate arrangements and services directly, keeping a reserved lodge visit distinct from access at the public landing.
That distinction also helps set the rhythm of a stay. The lodge presents time on the porch, reading and simple games as part of the experience alongside boating. A group can decide how much activity it wants before traveling, leaving enough time to enjoy the base it has arranged. The remoteness has practical implications too: the operator reports no cellular service at camp, so settle the route and communications plan before leaving reliable coverage.
Bill Sheehan’s original July 2010 birding account supplies a vivid water-level perspective. He and Laurie began driving early, but roadside bird observations delayed their paddle until midday. On the lake they encountered nesting common terns and moved away to give the birds space. His account also records gulls, loons and other waterbirds, with the nesting birds providing the most memorable part of the day. Those were observations from one historical outing, rather than a checklist promised to future visitors.
Let that combination of preparation and attention shape your own visit. A lake outing can include the pleasure of arriving, settling into the water’s pace and noticing something you had not planned to look for. Keep any wildlife observation distant, leave the shore undisturbed and return with enough daylight and energy for the road home.
