Mount Mitchell State Park is home to the highest peak east of the Mississippi River, with its summit reaching 6,684 feet above sea level. 2. Hidden Gem: The park has several scenic hiking trails, including the Balsam Nature Trail, which meanders through a picturesque forest filled with fragrant balsam fir trees. 3. The park's abundant plant life includes rare and endangered species like gray's lily, which can only be found on Mount Mitchell and a few other nearby peaks. 4. Record Breaker: Mount Mitchell experiences some of the coldest temperatures in the Eastern United States, with the lowest recorded temperature being a bone-chilling -34°F. 5. Historically Significant: The park is named after Elisha Mitchell, a geology professor who conducted the first scientific survey of the area. Unfortunately, Mitchell fell to his death while exploring the mountain, and his final resting place is now marked by a memorial at the summit.
